About
Academic Sciences Building
Texas Tech University
Lubbock, TX
130,000 sf

The Academic Sciences Building serves as a testament to Texas Tech’s commitment to advancing STEM disciplines as well as interdisciplinary collaboration, cutting-edge research and exceptional student experiences.

This state-of-the-art facility, located centrally within the historic district, spans 130,000 sf and serves five departments: Biology, Chemistry, Geosciences, Physics, and Psychology. Completed by BGK Architects in collaboration with EYP (now Page), the building features classrooms, lecture halls, conference rooms, offices and four core interdisciplinary research labs: a clean room, human sampling, biosafety level 2 and biosafety level 3. Designed through an inclusive process, the building fosters collaboration across various scientific disciplines, groundbreaking research and innovation.

Addressing outdated conditions of previous facilities, the Academic Sciences Building embodies Texas Tech University's vision for the future while also honoring its past. Designed in the traditional Spanish Renaissance architectural style of the Lubbock Campus, the building includes unique elements such as a hand-carved medallion with the symbol for the atom and the dates 1923-2023 celebrating the university’s centennial. An IGOR telescope prominently graces the primary courtyard entrance, underscoring the building's scientific focus.

At the Ribbon Cutting ceremony, Mark Griffin, chairman of the Texas Tech University System Board of Regents, stated, “This will be a place of collaboration and innovation for some of our greatest minds to develop solutions to the needs of our fellow West Texans, our state, and the world. This building is unique in that it bridges all Texas Tech has accomplished over the past 100 years and everything that is still possible.”
