About:
Travis County Medical Examiner’s Office
Travis County
Austin, TX
53,000sf
For many years, the Travis County Medical Examiner’s Office (TCMEO) had struggled with an outdated and cramped building that limited the productivity of its forensic investigators and medical professionals. SmithGroupJJR brought BGK on as an architectural consultant to complete the new TCMEO, which introduces a spacious, and technologically upgraded facility to address future growth and maximize forensic processes across the board. The new facility improves on the limited features of the old building by providing educational spaces for forensic pathology students in fellowship training programs, expanded parking and improved circulation, and a more secure and comfortable area for incoming families and visitors.
At 53,000 SF, the new facility includes a variety of upgraded spaces with expanded capacity such as the morgue, autopsy workstations, and investigations workspaces. Additionally, the facility affords more space for state-of-the-art laboratory instrumentation. These expanded spaces, along with updated systems and infrastructure to support them, allow TCMEO to optimize and improve operations and to better serve central Texas.
The new and improved TCMEO not only enhances the perception of its immediate community neighborhood, but it is also significant for Travis County’s long-term ability to recruit and retain top talent in the field of forensic pathology in the future.
